On Thursday the 14th of November 2019, the Maritime Archaeology Outreach Project (MAOP), run by the Alexandria University Centre for Maritime Archaeology & Underwater Cultural Heritage, and funded by the Honor Frost Foundation, organized a workshop in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, titled “The Young Explorer of the Great Sea”.
The workshop aimed to raise children’s awareness of underwater cultural heritage (UCH). In doing so the MAOP set a number of activities to introduce different aspects of UCH to 9-10 years old children. That included demonstration of diving equipment and the documentation of archaeological finds using boxes filled with sand and containing pieces of wood and pottery sherds. Participants were also introduced to the concept of In Situ preservation of UCH using a simulation of an archaeological site covered with artificial seagrass.
