A Regional Meeting on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage for the Mediterranean and Arab region was organized in Istanbul – Turkey by UNESCO in cooperation with the Agency of Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture from 25th  to 27th of October 2010.

The meeting aimed to promote the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage among the UNESCO Member States. It aspired furthermore to inform country representatives and cultural decision makers and provided a forum for the exchange of national experiences.

Representatives of more than 30 countries presented the current status of the legal and practical protection of underwater cultural heritage as well as the situation of underwater archaeology in their countries.

The Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage represented by Dr. Emad Khalil contributed to the meeting where Dr. Khalil presented the various activities that are carried out by the center as the main education and training facility in Africa and the Arab Region concerned with maritime and underwater cultural heritage. He also presents aspects of collaboration which is taking place between the center and other academic and research institutions in different countries.
