In July 2011 a group of researchers from the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, were able to locate the remains of at least two ancient shipwrecks at the northeast side of the bay of Marsa Bagoush. The sites contained a large concentration of Roman pottery, intact amphorae and some wooden remains (images & map attached). However, a comprehensive study of this unique site is essential in order to assess its archaeological and cultural potentials and values; also in order to develop a strategy to protect the site and preserve its cultural significance.
Therefore, 2012 project proposes a comprehensive underwater survey of the site of Marsa Bagoush, which includes locating, recording and dating the submerged archaeological remains. It also includes the study of the marine sediments, as well as their effects on current and wave action in the site, which is an integral part in the study of the site formation process, with the aim of developing a preservation strategy for the site which includes utilizing it for education and training purposes.
This project is a part of the support of Alexandria University for research projects.
