For the first time, Egypt is a member of UNESCO Scientific and Technical Advisory Body (STAB) on Underwater Cultural Heritage.

Professor Dr. Emad Khalil, Professor of Maritime Archeology at the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, and the Executive Director of the CMAUCH was elected as a member of the UNESCO Scientific and Technical Advisory Body (STAB) for the 2001 Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage. He was nominated for the membership by the Egyptian National Committee for UNESCO at the Ministry of Higher Education. The Egyptian Embassy in Paris, represented by Egypt’s permanent delegation to UNESCO, exerted strong diplomatic efforts to support the candidate of Egypt during the seventh session of the meeting of the member states of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage which was held at the headquarters of the organization in Paris on 20 – 21 June 2019.
The STAB consists of 14 international experts in underwater cultural heritage. It is the primary scientific reference to the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. The Committee provides expertise and scientific advice to the convention’s partner countries, including Egypt. It is worth noting that during that session, 6 out of 12 candidates from 12 countries were selected.
This is the first time an Egyptian expert has joined the STAB.
